MARINEMET project

The Spanish international cooperation in Africa develops the AFRIMET "Conference of Directors of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services of West Africa" program, through the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). Marinemet pilot project is part of this program.

Marinemet is a four-year (2009-2013) maritime meteorology pilot project which includes four northwest Africa coastal countries: Cape Verde, Mauritania, Senegal and Gambia.

The main objective of this project is to improve maritime meteorology knowledge and tools used by the national meteorological services of these countries. .

The philosophy of this cooperation is to transfer knowledge and technology so that once the project ends countries are autonomous in monitoring and forecasting maritime meteorology.

The project is divided into two distinct parts

1) Knowledge transfer:

Remote sensing products
Deep sea water modelling products
Port scale modelling products

2) Technology Transfer:

Tide gauges acquisition
Automatic weather stations acquisition
PCs purchase

Reduction of loss of lives and property

Reduction of damage to infrastructure

Provision of data for safe Navigation

Disaster prevention and preparedness

Improved fishing activities

Increased scientific and technical capacity

Improved knowledge of marine meteorology and ecology in West Africa and their relation with global change
